🤟 Kicking Off Rebel Cells in Japan, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, UK, Belgium and Slovenia

Hi Reader,

Happy New Year! Hope you had a good Christmas and NYE celebration and enjoyed some lovely time off with friends and family.

I sure did.

My girlfriend, daughter, and I, along with Joost, his girlfriend, and their son, are spending time in Indonesia together. First for vacation, now for 5 more weeks of remote work.

For me, the perfect way to start the year – with sunshine, beach, amazing food, and lovely people.

While our 3 weeks of vacation were amazing and extremely relaxing, I’m now just as eager to get back to making work more fun with our lovely team.

Especially, since we’ve got a lot of exciting things ahead of us.

Rebel Cells

Exactly 8 weeks ago, we announced a new concept that we call Rebel Cells. Rebel Cells are groups of pioneering organizations coming together to transform the way they work by learning, sharing, and connecting with like-minded organizations.

Think of meetups, company visits, knowledge sharing sessions, and more.

While much of the activity of Rebel Cells happens locally, all Cells are connected to a global network of pioneering organizations. Knowledge sharing happens through online courses, monthly online events, and a yearly in-person meetup for all members from around the world.

Since announcing the concept, more than 130 companies have expressed interest to join.

Based on that interest, we’re launching a first batch of cells in 7 countries:

  • Japan
  • Netherlands
  • Germany
  • Denmark
  • UK
  • Belgium
  • Slovenia

Together with local ‘cell coordinators’, we are welcoming pioneering organizations to join these cells.

There’s a fee involved, which is € 5,000* per organization per year (with 25% discount for public sector and 50% discount for NGOs and charities).

* To ensure accessibility for pioneers from around the world, this number is adjusted for local cost of living standards. Contact us for more information on local pricing.

If you’re interested in becoming part of one of these Rebel Cells, reply to this email and we’ll connect you to the local cell coordinator.

Some of the kick-off meetups are taking place in February.

New Book

In 2020 we published our first book, in 2022 our second, and in 2024 we’re publishing book number 3.

Working title: Bossless Companies – How flat hierarchies bring our love for family, friends, and money to the workplace

The book captures our most important insights into running and scaling bossless companies. Combining Joost’s PhD research with our in-depth research into 150+ pioneering firms, we lay down the fundamental differences of so-called ‘flat companies’.

While many assume that flat companies all follow the same paradigm, we argue that there are 3 vastly different approaches to running a company without middle managers. And each brings its own approaches, practices, and mindset.

Publication is expected in Q2. Stay tuned!

Masterclass 2024

As we’re scaling the Corporate Rebels Academy (there are already more than 1,100 rebels in the community!), we see our 6-week Masterclass as the most important program we offer.

More than 250 students have gone through this highly intensive online program. In six weeks, you learn a great deal on pioneering firms and how they organize themselves in a radically different way.

In March/April, we’re running another Masterclass for a maximum of 25 students.

If you want to become an expert on new ways of working, you might want to consider joining. More information can be found here.

Note: If you sign up for the upcoming Masterclass, you get a 1-year subscription to all our other courses (valued at € 948) for free.

What inspired us

Here's something noteworthy we discovered this past week that you’re going to love:

  • Traction
Last week, I read a book called “Traction.” It’s a highly popular book among small and medium sized business owners. In it, the author describes a framework for running an organization with focus, dedication, and transparency. Super practical. When you read it, be sure to avoid the people-related and organizational structure chapters, they’re painfully traditional. Still highly recommended!

Your weekly challenge

At Corporate Rebels, we believe that small changes lead to big results. That's why we challenge you each week to make a small but significant change. This week....

Since it’s the New Year's resolution season, here’s a challenge for you. If you find yourself making such a list, delete all but one. Yes, I’m serious. Instead of going wide, go deep. Do one thing and do it well.

Happy New Year 🥂🍾

Cheers,

This morning I read a piece in Harvard Business Review — the apex of thoughtful, measured, data-rich corporate discourse — titled “What’s the Future of Middle Management?” Spoiler: It's not extinction. The authors make a reasonable case: middle managers are still vital because of their unique position in the organizational food chain. But — and it's a big but — to stay relevant, they need to shrink in numbers and evolve in function. Less compliance cop, more talent developer. Less...

Pim De Morree

It was hot, loud, and late in São Paulo. We had just arrived, jet-lagged and buzzing with questions, about to meet one of the most iconic figures in the world of radical work design. The restaurant was sharp—white tablecloths, waiters with straight backs, and Ricardo Semler at the center of it all. He spoke with fire. Ideas about trust, freedom, decentralization, democracy at work. His vision was bold, clean, and intoxicating. But it wasn’t until later—hours later, in a quiet living room...

Hi Reader, One of my highlights every year? The 6-week masterclasses we run a few times annually. In each masterclass, we guide a cohort of about 30 practitioners through how to move their organizations beyond hierarchy. It’s a deep dive into progressive organizational design—topped off with hands-on work transforming their own organizations. No more layers of bureaucracy, no more sluggish decision-making, no more command-and-control nonsense. Just real tools for building better ways of...
